Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
